Track of the Day: “Away” – Sugarpill
No one tells tales of a celestial getaway like Sugarpill. From his broad synthy chords to his sparkly arpeggios, there is something escapist about his other-wordly tracks. Sugarpill, a veteran producer in the electronic scene, released his newest record Shimmer yesterday on Foundations Recordings. This five track album is a short story in and of itself. In it, Sugarpill breathes fresh life into classic glitch-hop beats with his beautifully constructed melodies wrapped up in, of course, a very spacey vibe.
The album begins with the namesake track, “Shimmer.” This song starts the story out on a more laid-back note, but by 2:30 has brought in some energy and effervescence, ramping the listener up for the second track, “Ima.” Personally, “Ima” connects me to Sugarpill’s sounds from a previous album Space Foray: similar soft, ting-y sounds that are diaphanous yet bold. It reminds me of where we’ve been and gets me excited for where we’re headed, which in this case is:
Our track of the day, “Away.“ This tight piece opens with a crisp drum rhythms and is quickly joined by those signature cosmic synths. A delicate first few bars spills into a bold theme, carrying through the percussive rhythm and truly taking the listener away. “Away” is the middle track of Shimmer, and the album concludes with “Hold Up” followed by “Get Right.” Check out the whole story here.
