TOTD: Marina and the Diamonds – “True Colors”
We’re just a few days into the New Year and one of my favorite artists surprisingly premiered a cover of a classic 80’s song. Marina and the Diamonds tackled Cyndi Lauper‘s Grammy-nominated hit, “True Colors” and released it on her YouTube channel. Rumored to have been recorded for a reissue of Froot, it never came to…fruition. Sorry, couldn’t avoid that pun. Marina’s vocals is as emotive as Lauper’s was in the original but instead, the song opts for a more solemn ballad. Though many artists have covered this song, none seem more expressive to me than the latest cover.
Fans are thrilled that the Welsh singer has released new music, the first new material since Froot was released in March of 2015. Marina’s updated version even has Cyndi Lauper in awe, the latter posting to her Facebook page in amazement. We completely agree with Lauper’s statement, Marina hauntingly sings with such power, such emotion, one can’t help but shed a tear or two. The way Marina started the year off feels like she’s foreseen what’s to come, and that even in critical moments, there’s still a glistening moment of hope and happiness.
