TOTD: Mac DeMarco – “The Stars Keep On Calling My Name”
There are certain songs that I enjoy, the kind that I envision a film for it. No, I’m not talking about filming a music video but an honest to God, good indie flick. Those tend to make the best scenarios in my head, but it is incredibly rare to find a song that encapsulates my visions as a whole. Though I have a handful of tunes that would make the perfect movie scenes, there’s only a certain track that captures the chilled vibes I want to express.
Mac DeMarco is a new favorite of mine, courtesy of a friend’s good taste in music. Digging through the Canadian singer-songwriter’s discography is enjoyable. Certain tracks like “Blue Boy” and “The Way You’d Love Her” became instant favorites. A more thorough search, or rather, a simple search on Tumblr led me to “The Stars Keep On Calling My Name.” Clocking in at over two minutes, Mac’s approach in “Stars” is almost whimsical. The instrumentation provides an almost cool and easygoing throwback to rock music from the 1950’s with the lyrics undoubtedly asking a girl to accompany him on his way out of town. The feel good nature of this tune has me wanting to grab a special someone, take them on a special adventure of debauchery and dancing, and simply look forward to whatever happens in the future.
