TOTD: Kylie Minogue – “Can’t Get You Out of My Head (Live From Aphrodite/Les Folies)”
Many, many years ago I became a fan of Kylie Minogue. I waited three years for her eleventh album to come out, and even then, I longed to see how much joy she would bring. Aphrodite evoked a sense of euphoria and awe, its dance-pop unmistakably belonging to Minogue and that of Stuart Price. For once, everything seemed to flow cohesively in sound while the image of the Grecian goddess gave Minogue an everlasting status as “Goddess of Pop.” Cut to 2011 and Kylie embarked on an extravagant affair to showcase her new material. Aphrodite Les Folies provided Minogue with one of her most brilliant and expensive stages, and while Europe and Australia saw the theatrical production, it was downplayed in other continents.
Midway through the lengthy set list came Kylie’s iconic hit. “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” has been transformed multiple times since its debut in 2001 and each mix is enchanting as the next. Opting out of the standard electronic inspired sound, Minogue went for a rockier version of her classic song. The holographic outfit Dolce & Gabbana provided for the tour clashes well against the reddened stage, giving rise to an intense and passionate performance. One of my favorite performances, both in person and on film, involves the audience chanting the repetitious chorus, and let me tell you, it is a catchy and awestruck moment getting the chance to sing it back to Aphrodite herself.
