TOTD: Cocovan – “Chic (Someone to Love)”
I’ve been thinking a lot about the state of pop music and how artists are failing to produce something…good. Not just good, but something that resonates well within this always changing genre. Gwen Stefani’s This Is What the Truth Feels Like failed to impress aside from its singles, and other acts are failing to produce their best/delaying their records. I understand capturing that essence is hard, but month after month, year after year, you begin to lose faith and Top 40 becomes littered with pedestrian songs. After such a lengthy and painstakingly lackluster period, enter Cocovan. This Parisian artist has restored my faith in that good pop music is on the horizon.
Glorious synths wash over you akin to Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own,” I can’t help but feel “Chic (Someone to Love)” is the new dance-pop anthem. It’s a powerful statement, looking forward and hopeful despite broken hearts lying in the past. The resilience is strong in this one, and bopping along is inevitable. The video for the brilliant track is expertly done in one shot and is directed by the artist herself. Adding to the feel good nature and overall 80s vibe, Cocovan dons a leotard and manages to express herself creatively.
“Chic (Someone to Love)” has rejuvenated me, cleansed my soul and helped me ascend to heaven. It’s been on heavy rotation on my iPod and flows beautifully with my favorite dance tracks.
