The NYC Freaks Come Out At Night: Bustle In Your Hedgerow & Almost Dead
Once upon a time, back before multiple Facebook invites became the norm, before the Wetlands became a high-end furniture store, before Twitter and before Instagram, there were the NYC Freaks. If your monthly concert budget exceeded your rent, this Yahoo! music group was your tribe. This weekend, the Freaks will reunite at the 13th annual Freaks Ball, taking place at the current epicenter of the New York City jamiverse, Brooklyn Bowl.
Friday will feature the inimitable instrumental Led Zeppelin tribute super group Bustle In Your Hedgerow. The increasingly infrequently paired Joe Russo and Marco Benevento will shred through all your Zep faves with Dave Dreiwitz (formerly of Ween) holding down the low end and Scotty “Boom Boom” Metzger playing the role of Jimmy Page for the evening. Russo and Metzger will also open the evening with Tom Hamilton‘s alt-country band American Babies.
On Saturday, the group will use their powers for more good, the good ol’ Grateful Dead to be precise. Apparently Sir Joe has not gotten his fill of Dead tunes with Furthur or Phil & Friends. Tom Hamilton of Brothers Past will be back in the mix, adding guitar and presumably vocals to the ensemble, appropriately dubbed Almost Dead. Sam Cohen of Apollo Sunshine will open the night with the Southern fried psychedelic twang of his Yellowbirds project and DJ Cochon de Lait will keep the party grooving late with deep New Orleans funk cuts.
There are still tickets available for Friday here and Saturday will have limited tickets at the door.
