Summer Set Music Festival’s Grove Stage and On-Site Afters
Summer Set Music Festival has nailed their lineup every time. With hip-hop legends every single year and some of the most talented electronic and jam musicians, the festival is young but not stupid. The small town of Somerset, Wisconsin becomes a booming place for life and music. With the festival only in its third year this year, there are some obvious kinks to work out.
In its inaugural year, the Hockey Arena brought larger than life light shows even at noon, but the sheer heat of the venue was almost unbearable. Last year, Summer Set opened up a pocket of the land and put a tent at the bottom of it. They called it the Grove Stage, and it was just as packed as the main stage most of the time, but without all the land to hold everyone. Long lines and multiple security checks caused people to sometimes arrive to their favorite artist’s set later than expected. On their way out, it was just as daunting. I noticed myself staying at the stage rather than trying to head to another in fear that I wouldn’t get back into the Grove Stage later. All negativity aside, the shows at the Grove Stage were incredibly intimate and fun. No one left that stage upset, regardless of how long it took to get in or out.
This year, Summer Set just announced improvements to the popular Grove Stage. They’ve expanded the area on which the stage will stand, as well as taken away the tent for maximum sun and fun. Again, while a 24/7 light show is an amazing idea, sometimes it just doesn’t work for the heat, and it’s a compromise we are willing to make.
As if improvements for the Grove Stage weren’t enough, they’ve just announced the on-site after parties at the new and improved site! Friday, August 15th after the headliners have packed up, we’ll be heading down to see Gramatik and the debut of ManicScience (Manic Focus + Break Science) for an on-site afterparty. These groups have an awesome reputation for collaborating, and we can’t wait for it. The second night’s afterparty brings Savoy and Emancipator Ensemble, two more sets we can’t help but geek about. The new and improved Grove Stage should be a great improvement as Summer Set keeps getting better and better.
The festival will be held August 15-17th in Somerset, WI. You can purchase tickets here!
