Summer Camp 2014 Must-See Artist: Cosby Sweater
Memorial Day weekend is only two months away, and Summer Camp Music Festival’s eclectic lineup is filled to the brim with vibrant talent from instantly recognizable and legendary artists to newcomers and up-and-coming musicians. Cosby Sweater only just recently turned 2 years old, and the impact they’ve had on the jamtronica scene is impressive and exciting. The versatile band includes David Embry on production and vocals, Nicholas Gerlach on tenor saxophone and EWI, and Richard “Sleepy” Floyd on drums. Joel Cummins of Umphrey’ McGee frequently sits in with the trio as well, so with Umphrey’s playing 5 shows at Summer Camp, I think we will be seeing this collaboration again.
Cosby Sweater instantly set a high standard for themselves with their first album Hey Girl Hey, which not only revealed an innovative new sound but also an energetic and refreshing sense of humor. Combining elements of live-tronica reminiscent of The New Deal and Big Gigantic, Cosby Sweater enthralls fans through the Internet and on the road with artists like Pretty Lights, Minnesota, Digital Tape Machine, and Tipper, and are now on tour with Break Science (check out their recent Break Science remix). As a new staple in the festival circuit, Cosby Sweater performed at Summer Camp last year and made appearances at Electric Forest, Camp Bisco, and Hyperion.
Cosby Sweater’s second album #coolstorybro (2013) perfects the Cosby Sweater sound and introduces dynamic production capabilities, and with songs like “Sex Journey,” you know you’re going to be entertained. The audacious synthesis of harmonious layers of keyboards, cutting edge electronica, and the vivacious sounds of Gerlach’s sax and EWI has earned Cosby Sweater a prominent place in music and will hopefully ensure continual growth and long-term success. With dozens of exciting mash-ups, remixes, and a seemingly endless supply of charisma, the future holds infinite possibilities for Cosby Sweater, making them one of the most sensational new artists on the Summer Camp lineup this year. You can download all of their music for free on SoundCloud, so listen up!
