SOLARiS: “SolarMix Volume V: The Lost Tapes”
There are so many genre labels in today’s music scene. But one group that you cannot put a label on is SOLARiS. Forming in 2010 in New York, the trio blends electronica, funk, jazz, trance and many other genres into their studio and live efforts. The band consists of Jared Raphel (Keyboards), Vince Naro (Bass) and Daniel Lyons (Drums). In their release,“SolarMix Volume V: The Lost Tapes”, SOLARiS takes you on a journey through so many musical realms.
The opening track,“Unfrozen (A Live Jam)” is lead by Jared Raphel with solos that are reminiscent to John Medeski (MMW) & Steve Molitz (Particle). Bassist, Naro, throws down a funky bassline in the tune and Lyons keeps the group together with his masterful work on the drumkit. Mid-way through this track you can just imagine a group of concert-goers dancing their butts off to this New York based trio.
This early 2014 release was recorded and produced in only one week’s time. SOLARiS not only showcases some dynamic electronic beats but also improvises at the drop of a hat.“SolarMix Volume V: The Lost Tapes” is a prime example of how the group can play off one another with ease and keep the jams flowing.
The track that really shows the group’s diverse talents is “Fourth Jam”. With Mr. Raphel’s, synthesizer work in “Fourth Jam”, he makes it sound like there are waves crashing against a shoreline. In this song you can feel the build up with Naro & Lyons gelling well together on the bass and drumkit. “Fifth Jam” is a highlight on “SolarMix Volume V: The Lost Tapes”. The upbeat tempo make it hard to resist the urge to bob your head and tap your foot (don’t be afraid to get up and groove to this one).
Their skillful musicianship and experienced improvising prove that SOLARiS will make an impact for years to come in the music industry.
