Road to Camp Bisco – Lily Enchin
After seeing the Disco Biscuits for the first time at Bonnaroo in 2010…let’s just say- I had caught the bug! Absolutely nothing and nobody would stop me from seeing this band again- And soon! Just one month later I would be heading to the Indian Lookout Country Club for the very first time for Camp Bisco IX. My first Camp Bisco was a memorable one: from the epic lightning storm that forced us to seek shelter in our cars, to my first Orchard Lounge set at sunrise at the Silent Disco.
Camp Bisco is also where I first truly fell in love with the hula hoop. That year on the Saturday night (after the storm) I caught a vibrant, swirling array of colors in the darkness near my campsite and simply had to go see what was going on. A girl camping beside me was swinging two LED hula hoops in the air, weaving her arms back and forth in a beautiful dance of light and color. It was truly spectacular to watch and really inspired me to pick up a hoop myself. I now wouldn’t dream of coming to Camp without at least one of my hoops; they have simply become part of my required packing list. Hooping has really been growing in popularity in the last 5 years, notably within the festival community and I just love the positive energy it brings forth in people. While hooping during a set on Main Field, it’s amazing how you are able to encounter all different kinds of people hooping and all at very different skill levels. It’s an environment of support, compassion, and absolutely no judgment. Each of my buddies in my Camp Bisco crew has attempted to hoop on several occasions (even the guys) and are constantly getting better and better, feeling more confident when they can keep it up on their waist for longer amounts of time. Sometimes even holding a hoop, while walking around the ILCC is a good way to attract the attention of a new friend or allow someone who’s never tried hooping to have a go. It’s been amazing to see over the years how this fun activity can be such an effective means of bringing people together!
