Need a Break from the Screen? 4 Tips for Finding Entertainment Offline
Most of us will agree that we all get a little too much screen time these days. And with most of the world currently in lockdown due to the global outbreak of COVID19, many people are turning to their smart TVs, laptops, and smartphones for entertainment. But are you getting a little bored of staring at a screen? After a while, there are only so many TV shows to watch, games to play or social media feeds to scroll through before you begin to feel like doing something else.
If you want to step away from the screen for a while and have a break from technology, there are several ideas to consider. We’ve put together some super easy things that you can do when you feel like disconnecting from technology.
Card and Board Games
Playing board and card games is an age-old pastime for many families and groups of friends. And, there are many great games that you can pick up and play without having to even think about technology. You can play classic board games or card games like poker with your family while in lockdown if you’re all getting a bit sick of watching TV and want something fresh and different to do. If you usually only crack out the board games at Christmas, you’re missing out – classics like Monopoly can be huge fun and provide hours of entertainment for everyone. Or, why not try a retro game like Nin-Nin, with many popular characters?
Go for a Walk
One of the easiest things that you can do when you’re sick of staring at a screen is to go outside and get some fresh air. And if you’re currently stuck in lockdown, getting some time outdoors is even more important. Try to go somewhere local that is not very busy, and keep your distance from other people. A leisurely stroll through your local park can make all the difference to how you feel for the rest of the day, or if you have a friend nearby, walk to their house and pay them a social distancing approved visit through their window.
Cook a Meal
If you’re bored with scrolling through your Instagram feed but don’t really know what else to do to stay busy, why not cook something? Making a delicious dish from scratch is a great idea and if you don’t want to have your phone or tablet nearby, find the recipe online first and print it off or write it down so that you can hide your technology while you enjoy preparing the food. There are plenty of fabulous ideas for making food, whether you want to try making a dish that you loved on vacation once or bake a family favorite cake.
Read a Good Book
Getting lost in a really good book for hours is a great way to spend your time, and it’s good for your brain. If you trust yourself to focus solely on the book and stay away from your apps and web browser, eBooks are a great option too as you have access to a huge library of titles right at your fingertips without having to leave the house or wait for your book to be delivered. If you’re using an eBook app on your smartphone or tablet, switch on Do Not Disturb mode or even better, Airplane Mode to make sure that you don’t get any distracting notifications.
These are just some fun ideas for things that you can do either alone or with your family if you want a break from technology. While screen time has many benefits, it’s always good to get away from it all and do something else for a while.
