Medeski Martin & Wood Coming to Legendary Blue Note With Friends
John Medeski, Billy Martin, and Chris Wood are no strangers to the intimate confines of downtown’s multiple jazz nooks. The group was practically birthed at the now-defunct Tonic on the Lower East Side. A few years ago, they traipsed through a trio of smallish clubs from TriBeCa to Greenwich Village on consecutive nights. This week, December 11 through 16, the venerable veterans will bring their virtuosity to the Blue Note Jazz Club for an extended run. The flagship of the now-international jazz club chain (not to be confused with the legendary label on which the trio released some of their best material) has hosted a who’s who of contemporary jazz stars in its 30-plus year history.
Another mainstay in the annals of Medeski Martin & Wood is the frequent inclusion of contributors to their ongoing onstage musical repartee, and this residency will be no exception. Their last high profile New York City gig at the Undead Jazz Festival stretched this all-inclusive ethos to its logical extreme, and they seem content to continue this trend. Over the course of the week long run, the Shacklyn warriors will be aided and abetted by Miles Davis sideman Bill Evans on sax, versatile session man Marc Ribot and Wilco noisenik Nels Cline on the six strings, Senegal’s Aiyb Deng on percussion, and free jazz multi-instrumentalist Marty Ehrlich. Taking the group’s deep roster of collaborators into consideration, an unannounced guest or two would not be out of the question.
The run will take place nightly from December 11-16. The band will perform two shows each night at 8:00PM and 10:30PM. For additional info and tickets, click HERE.
