Late Night Alumni – The Hidden Gem of EDM At Electric Zoo 2014
Late Night Alumni will take the stage on August 30 at The Electric Zoo on Randall’s Island in New York City. A culmination of down-tempo electronic and string melodies, serene vocals, and a band name that speaks to most millennials nowadays, Late Night Alumni is one of the best kept secrets you’ll find at Electric Zoo 2014.
Late Night Alumni boasts a trio of talented producers along with a soulfully soothing vocalist. The lineup consists of singer Becky Jean Williams alongside producers Finn Bjarnson, John Hancock and Ryan Raddon aka Kaskade.
The quadrifecta came together in the mid-2000s after Bjarnson found Williams’ vocals on a local Christmas album that he had a hand in producing. Bjarnson had been working with Kaskade in the studio. The three of them started Late Night Alumni in 2003 and were signed to British label Hed Kandi in 2004. That same year producer John Hancock joined them, an addition the group considered to be ‘the missing element’ they needed to complete their sound.
In 2005 their debut album Empty Streets was not heavily promoted; Hed Kandi, their label at the time was bought out by The Ministry of Sound when Empty Streets had just been released. As a result the album was shelved, a twist of fate that turned their first record into an underground classic soon after.
Their single Empty Streets off the album of the same name reached #1 in Spain and made the top 10 on charts in the US and UK. The single has been featured in several compilations from top tier DJs and is still the most well received track to date on In Search of Sunrise by Tiësto. You also may have heard it in this Toyota commercial.
Since 2009 Late Night Alumni has been signed to Ultra Records. They released their second album Of Birds, Bees, Butterflies, Etc. the same year, continuing their hybrid sound legacy of electronic music and string instruments tied together with smooth serenades.
LNA released two more albums to date on Ultra Records: Haunted in 2011, and their latest record A Beat Becomes A Sound in 2013. They recently wrapped up a tour in Asia and will be hitting the road soon with Myon and Shane 54 from Hungary.
If you’re already a fan, it goes without saying what a beautiful time that’s in store at their performance. If you’re not so familiar with Late Night Alumni, you’ll be glad to have Finally Found your way to see them play live, just like how Finn Bjarnson first ‘stumbled upon’ hearing Becky Jean Williams for the first time.
Be sure to get a good spot at the Beatport Riverside Stage on Saturday, August 30 to see Late Night Alumni at The Electric Zoo 2014 at NYC’s Randall’s Island Park! It’s Not Happening for another 2 weeks and I’m anxiously counting down until then. I swear, I can’t stop thinking about it; nowadays it’s like Every Breath Feels Like A Heartbeat.
