In the Woods with Shaleece Martin, Backwoods Music Festival Lifer
In preparation for Backwoods Music Festival, we asked lifer Shaleece Martin, Executive Assistant to the CEO of Royall Advertising, what her tips were for making the most out of the festival weekend.
What are three things that you would want someone who has never been to Backwoods to know about the festival?
“This year is going to be a game changer for Backwoods. The lineup is insane. This is a crossover music festival with all kinds of good music. Finally, you will leave this world behind for the weekend.”
Describe your three, favorite memories from the first year that you attended Backwoods.
“The people – so awesome, so fun, so crazy, so interesting, so happy; the fire dancers and T-Chicken and her long hair and violin.”
What is your favorite musical memory from Backwoods?
“We thought the show was over because of the Oklahoma weather. They combined the two stages together and the Floozies jammed out for the headlining act. Epic! Now it has moved from Memorial Day to Labor Day.”
In a sentence, why do you come back to Backwoods year after year?
“I am about living for experiences and this is one I never want to miss.”
What is something that Backwoods has that no other festival offers?
“You can climb to the top of a 130 foot fire tower and control laser beams over the entire festival!”
What are 5 things that every newcomer should bring with them to Backwoods?
“Bring a light scarf to wear and then use to lay on out in the meadow, a water float and towel because there is a lake, fun clothes- EDM or hippie, lights or lace to have fun being part of the beauty and bring hand and face wipes. Oranges and bananas are good to give someone who needs one to make their day. Also, trash bags to keep your area clean which is good for everyone and a hammock for the woods.”
How do you personally contribute to the Backwoods community?
“Personally, I am one of the producer’s girlfriends and I am also his work assistant. So leading up to the festival, I set up meetings with the vendors and volunteers and help with ideas, blogs, social media, music, et cetera. I feel very lucky to be close to all of the amazing people who help make this possible and getting to know all the attendees and supporters. At the festival I help wherever I can: pick up trash, test the best food trucks ever, give a ride to people on the golf cart, but mostly I have a great time. When your vibe is good everything is good!”
If you could take a Backwoods newbie under your wing for a day at the festival, what are some of the things you would do and show them? What is a ‘must not be missed’ feature of the festival?
“One thing I never miss is the moment at the top of the Ferris wheel when you look around and take it all in. Take your time and pace yourself, but explore everything and see where you end up. This year we are having a helicopter and I haven’t been in one before so I will be trying that for sure.”
What are you looking forward to most about Backwoods 2015?
“Porter Robinson and the new stage designs – one of them is a tree house! I look forward to seeing my friends from last year and experiencing something that I haven’t experienced before. See you in the woods!”
