Humans of TomorrowWorld: The GloHawks
I discovered the GloHawks on the first night at TomorrowWorld. Noticing a girl with a crazy glowing mohawk, I asked to take her photo. Suddenly, a whole gang with glowing mohawks jumped in! They handed me their GloHawk business card and the rest is history (you know you’re serious when you have business cards for you and your raver friends). After getting home from TW, I shuffled through my list of business cards and photos from the weekend (TW is actually like a giant conference for electronic music fanatics!) and was brought back to the GloHawks. They have a Facebook page and even a website where you can find out what shows they are going to. I was impressed by how legit this group was that I just had to reach out to them. Here is an interview I did with King and Queen GloHawk on behalf of all the great GloHawks!
Sensible Reason: What are the GloHawks? How did this get started up?
The GloHawks: The GloHawks are a Central Florida PLUR devoted to spreading love, silliness, costumed craziness and weird dance moves everywhere we go. We really began in earnest at EDC 2012, when we got our first taste of the majesty that is an EDM festival. After that, our group of ravers meet up for local and regional EDM events, often wearing our signature light up GloHawks or other variation of a mohawk along with an assortment of over-the-top costumes. We’re known for our positive attitudes and try to promote the positive aspects of EDM at every event we attend. We’ve made a ton of friends along the way and love meeting new individuals at local and national music festivals. We wait can’t to go to our next festival and meet so many more new PLUR fellow EDM lovers.
SR: How did you come up with the concept of the “GloHawk”?
GloHawks: The concept developed over time, it was the King Glohawk that found the original Mohawks, and we started wearing them to different events. The first big event we wore them to was EDC 2012 and people loved them! It made everyone smile, so we knew it was going to become a regular thing! King Glohawk eventually found mohawks that lit up, and everyone who knows the Glohawks will tell you that we can’t pass up anything that glows, so we got them. King Glohawk called them “glow hawks” and we eventually started calling ourselves the GloHawks! Our mission is pretty simple: get weird, rock the Glohawk and make as many people happy as possible… so that’s what we do :).
GloHawks: Well, we don’t ever really have an official number…there’s three core members that attend most of the events, and that’s the king Glohawk, queen Glohawk and TK Disco. But the beauty if our group is that as we meet awesome people along the way, anyone is a Glohawk! We’ll stick a Glohawk on ya and you’re in!
SR: Why was TomorrowWorld special to you guys?
GloHawks: When we saw the TomorrowWorld aftermovie, we instantly KNEW we had to attend. We stayed up all night at an EDM paint party, but still woke up at the crack of down to purchase our tickets at the first possible second.
TomorrowWorld was very special because it was our first camping festival. We also united our friends from all over– we had best friends in Atlanta and from all over Florida stay and camp with us. We were blown away by the amazing DJ sets, the wondrous stages and the lively atmosphere at TomorrowWorld. There was something unique about TommorrowWorld, so much so that many TWers are prone to still wearing their bracelet everywhere they go!
After attending TomorrowWorld, we met so many beautiful people that we had to stay in touch. We recently hosted a TW reunion at the Bingo Players show with over 50+ of our “Festie Fam.” After that, we started a TomorrowWorld takes EDC Facebook group. We all decided to have a group photo meet-up! We continue to stay in touch with our TW family and TWers are already planning more meet-ups for the Deadmau5 show in Tampa and the Life in Color event in Miami.
SR: How do you find the time to cover so many EDM events?
GloHawks: We find the time to cover so many events because it’s important to us! It’s hard, we all have full time jobs, school and other responsibilities, but we make the time to attend EDM events because they are an escape from reality. Some people take beach vacations; we don a Glohawk and rage with thousands of our family!
SR: What is your motivation to keep attending these events and keep the GloHawks going?
GloHawks: Our motivation is the awesome people. Where else in the world can you go where people love and accept everyone? EDM festivals and events are a utopia of lights, sound, experiences and loving, positive people that make the experience as a whole one to cherish. The positive feedback from our EDM family keeps the GloHawks going, truly. The wigs are recognizable so we’ve been able to reconnect with so many people that we’ve met over festival season, as well as in our Orlando hometown. We also love to wear crazy costumes, that’ll never change!
GloHawks: Festivals like TW create such a unique environment that allows for people to shed their 9-5 normalcy and dress up, get body painted, wear wigs and let their creativity flow. When you meet hundreds of people at a festival who either dress up and get weird like you do or like your outfits and want to do something similar, bonds form and groups organically form.
SR: Are you aware of any other groups similar to the GloHawks?
GloHawks: We’ve met a lot of different tribes, we met the Wolfpack recently! Just a really cool group of guys and gals that wear wolf spirit hoods and spread the positive vibes. We’ve also had the pleasure of meeting Lady Casa and many of her PLUR Warriors, who are all about spreading love and positivity to people, as well as spreading the importance of taking care of our momma earth.
TomorrowWorld brings together the most creative, passionate, and loving humans and fosters groups of people to join in unison under the mantra of Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect (and they really mean it). The GloHawks show how open and free these groups are; not exclusive, elitist, or purist. They are quite simply a group of people who connected over their excitement for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and then bring together more and more people who share in similar pursuits. If you met the GloHawks, you are connected to them (and can literally stay connected thanks to Facebook groups and pages!). The fact that the GloHawks had TomorrowWorld-inspired meet-ups at other festivals is a testament to the strength and uniqueness of this community. So we tip our hat to these Humans of TomorrowWorld, the GloHawks, for the spirit they bring this global dance movement. They do it for the love of the music and the people, and nothing less.
