Track of the Day: Game of Thrones Gets an 80’s Infusion
If there’s any image I like more than Jaime Lannister in his knightly regalia, it would be Ygritte the Wildling with a side-ponytail and leg warmers, snapping her gum, saying loudly: “like, gawd, Jon Snow, you know nothing.”
But we all know that the Game of Thrones franchise, since its explosion onto television in 2011, is huge — the HBO series is based off the continuing book series A Song of Ice and Fire by author George R. R. Martin, and has inspired everything from house-related clothing, to video parodies, to hip-hop tracks. With such immense viewership, it is no surprise that the opening credits sport a truly catchy song, amid steam-punk themed visuals, which we can’t readily get out of our heads after a particularly shocking Sunday evening episode.
Now, that same opener has been synthesized to your heart’s delight by Russian producer Steve Duzz, who has turned our favorite theme song into an 80’s groove (see track above). Although the producer is stated to have said he wasn’t initially setting out to remix the Game of Thrones opener, his toying around with iconic 80’s-style synthesizers ultimately produced this stellar track, which currently has over 20,000 plays on Youtube. Clearly inspired by Miami Vice and Bran Stark’s retro shag hair-do, this remix has all the boogy-inducing beats your traveling boots could want.
Game of Thrones is sticking around — they just capped off Season 4 with an unsurprisingly gasp-worthy finale, making us wait until Spring 2015 to catch up with our favorite sword-wielders and dragon-mothers — so get your fix for something new in the meantime with this alternative track. Check it out, and don’t forget to request it at your next Westerosi-themed dance party.
