Jimkata – Chain Stores:
Primus – My Name is Mud
When I was nine years old, I remember getting blown away by watching a video of Primus perform at woodstock 94′. I knew that day that I was as weird as them and that I was going to do something weird with my life as well. My cousin and I would crank up my little white tape player and practice stage diving from our bunk-beds.
Michael Jackson – Black or White
I grew up without cable so we’d have tapes of our favorite cartoons and movies on repeat. There was this one random tape of a Simpsons episode with Michael Jackson’s video for Black or White on the end. It had that warbly sound that old videos have and I probably watched it til it wore out completely.
Paul Simon – Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes
Everything about Graceland is genius. From the South African rhythms, tones, vocals, the prominence of the bass line as the lead melody, Simon’s lyrical mastery, and the inherent social statement on Apartheid. I didn’t understand as a little kid cutting a rug in the living room just how revolutionary this album is.
NOFX – Linoleum
I think Packy introduced me to NOFX when we were in middle school. We used to cover a lot of their songs in our first band. Always loved their ridiculous stage banter and how underneath their “dont give a fuck attitude” theres actually some beautiful progressions and good harmonies.
Rubblebucket – Pain From Love
I had a Rubblebucket geek out period last summer after their (Focus) Over-saturated ep came out. Its catchy, soulful, playful, and relatable but also different and intriguing. I believe this is the true pop music of our day. It makes me wanna go turn on a neon jukebox with my weird friends and drink pitchers of soda. But seriously, Lets dance.
