Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival 2012 Preview
Electronic music producers from around the globe will descend on the epicenter of the hipster universe this weekend for the 5th annual installment of the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival. Electronic dance music is quickly infiltrating popular music culture in America with popular artists like Deadmau5 and Skrillex appearing at the Grammys and Swedish House Mafia selling out the Garden. However, in typical Brooklyn fashion, this festival will feature acts from outside the sphere of mainstream influence, though well known to electronic music connoisseurs. Over the course of two nights in six venues, BEMF will bring a smorgasborg of forward thinking dance music to Brooklyn. Here is a primer on some of the not-to-miss acts.
Hailing from the fertile UK electronic scene, Gold Panda has released his glitchy organic beats on local label Ghostly International which has made its name with ethereal breakbeat soundscapes.
Kingdom is a local Brooklyn producer drawing inspiration from global sounds ranging from Caribbean dancehall to UK garage, but never straying far from the low end.
This practically unpronounceable L.A. production duo draws influence from sources as varied as Chicago footwork and mid-’90s R&B.
Uproot Andy & Geko Jones
These two locals are behind the popular Que Bajo?! parties, which have been responsible for bringing some of the best latin electronic music to dance floors across New York City.
One of the most expressive composers of electronic music today, Nico is adept at blending live instrumentation with his unique brand of introspective minimal dance floor fare.
Along with contemporaries Joy Orbison and Boddika, the man formerly known as Ramadanman is at the forefront of bass heavy techno.
This British producer specializes in dancehall and grime, filtering Jamaica through UK bass.
Arising from the same lo-fi L.A. beat scene that spawned Flying Lotus among others, Shlohmo brings a blend of down tempo psychedelic hip hop concoctions.
Of course, this is just a sampling of the many acts that will be performing at the festival. For more info and a complete line up, click HERE.
