Must-See Artists at Mountain Jam
Mountain Jam 2014 is coming in full force with headliners like the Allman Brothers Band, Bob Weir & Ratdog, and Pretty Lights. This will certainly make for a mind-blowing tenth anniversary year for Mountain Jam! As with any other festival, along with the headliners comes a list of other artists you may or may not have heard of. In my own experience going to festivals and live events, these are usually the bands I end up falling in love with and developing an obsession for. Seeing a band you have never known or heard of before live on a stage proves to be a totally different experience than simply hearing them on the internet. Seeing an artist live provides an energy and connection that is missed when simply listening to a recording. So without further ado, I would like to present some Mountain Jam artists who I have seen live, who simply blew me away!
Sister Sparrow And The Dirty Birds: The first time I saw Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds was at the Catskill Chill music festival. One of my best friends told me to check them out because she had a “lady-crush” on the lead singer and could not stop telling me interesting facts about the band. Since then, I have seen them about 4 more times and have never been disappointed once! The band knows how to command an audience, and the lead singer can certainly wail out.
Antibalas: Although I have never heard them perform at a festival, I heard them featured in the music for the off-Broadway show Fela!, a musical celebrating the life of Fela Kuti. The group arranged and performed the show’s score of music originally performed by Kuti. In the fall of 2009, Fela! opened on Broadway at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre, once again with Antibalas.
Beats Antique: Since seeing this group perform live at Bonnaroo 2011, I have seen them over a dozen times. Beats Antique is not simply just a musical experience. They blend world music, electronics, and breathtaking performance art. Past shows have combined elements such as belly dancing, animal costumes, marching bands, unique song covers, blow ups, and crowd surfing inflatable rafts. This is a true do-not-miss.
Those are my true loves, coming to Mountain Jam. What are your “cannot miss” live performances that will be at Mountain Jam this year? Let us know!
