AnimeFest Brings All the Cosplayers to the Yard
With Comic Con and A-Kon just passed by this summer, Dallas, TX has one more nerdgasmic adventure for its cosplaying geeks to take on from August 15th to the 18th – AnimeFest. It is a non-profit corporation with a mission to educate the public about animation, cinema, art, music, games, crafting, magna, costume, dance, and other forms of the tradition in pop culture. The convention is largely based around the Japanese animation, “anime,” which has been a huge phenomenon in America since the ’70s and is exponentially growing in fandom.
It has been held consecutively at the Sheraton Hotel in the heart of downtown Dallas, where a lot of its cosplayers also choose to reside during the four days of geektastic fun.
Unlike other conventions, panels are created, hosted, and voted upon by the fans. During the application stage, panels targeting a certain show, movie, memorabilia, or even Japanese styles are made, and the audience decides which ones get approved or declined through an online vote.
This year, special guests from Japan include: rock band FLOW, directors Shingo Natsume and Kazuhiro Furuhashi, animators Hiroyuki Aoyama and Hiroshi Shimizu, and writers Dai Sato and Kimiko Ueno. United States local stars on the roster are: actor and producer Rueben Langdon; artist Amelie Belcher, actors/actresses Tara Platt, Yuri Lowenthal, Alexis Tipton, Todd Haberkorn and Ian Sinclair; voice actress/comic artist, Kristen McGuire, and game designer Eric Wile.
Not only will there be panels, but also two costume contests and a dance party with special DJs on the turntables! This isn’t your ordinary get-together.
